Google Rolls Out January 2020 Core Update
Google officially launched another broad core update on January 13th, 2020. The following announcement was made via the official Twitter account, Google Search Liaison:
The previous update, known as the September 2019 Core Update, was slow to roll out and had a minor impact. Based on our analytics and chatter within the SEO industry, the January 2020 Core Update is far more powerful.
Although the January 2020 Core Update impacted nearly every niche, domains related to YMYL (your money, your life) took a hard hit.
Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) are pages that can have an impact on your well being, including happiness, health, safety, and financial stability. YMYL pages should be written from reputable and authoritative experts in the subject area.
Based on our analytics, it appears Google has increased its guidelines on medical content. Medical websites impacted by core updates tend to have a low E-A-T score (expertise, authority, and trustworthiness).
What Can You do if You're Hit by Google's Core Updates?
Google has previously shared advice about broad core algorithm updates: "We know those with sites that experience drops will be looking for a fix, and we want to ensure they don't try to fix the wrong things. Moreover, there might not be anything to fix at all." Google added, "There's nothing wrong with pages that may perform less well in a core update."
Our best advice is to build great content, and Google's algorithms will reward you.
